Engineering Staff Augmentation — Patient Data Platform, Toronto, Canada
The Situation
A Toronto-based healthtech company had won a contract with Ontario Health to build a patient data interoperability platform connecting 14 regional health providers across the province. The contract came with 3 fixed delivery milestones and financial penalties for each one missed.
Six months into the build, a funding round closed later than expected. The resulting 3-month hiring freeze left the engineering team 6 people short at the worst possible time. The first milestone was 11 weeks out. The team as it stood could not hit it.
Reopening the hiring process was not viable at the speed required. Ontario Health's contract required all engineers working on the platform to have passed a background check and signed a PHIPA data handling agreement before accessing any patient data. That process alone took 8 to 12 days on a fast track. A standard hiring pipeline would not clear people in time.
What Amorisoft Did
Amorisoft had placed engineers in PHIPA-regulated environments before. That mattered from day one because the brief was not just about technical skills. Every candidate had to be clearable within the timeline and had to have prior experience handling regulated health data. Amorisoft filtered for both before sending a single name across.
A longlist of 19 candidates was delivered within 3 days of brief. All 19 had prior experience in regulated data environments. 14 had direct PHIPA or equivalent provincial health data experience. The VP of Engineering ran technical interviews across days 4 through 8. Amorisoft ran background check initiation in parallel from day 4 for all candidates who passed the initial screen, before final selection was confirmed, to compress the clearance timeline.
6 engineers were selected by day 10. All 6 cleared PHIPA background checks by day 14. First day on keyboards was day 15.
The team covered 3 backend engineers with HL7 FHIR integration experience, 2 security engineers with provincial health data compliance backgrounds, and 1 senior integration architect who had worked on a comparable Ontario Health project 2 years prior. That last placement turned out to matter more than expected: the architect identified a data mapping approach in week 2 that saved an estimated 3 weeks of build time on the provider integration layer.
Amorisoft's delivery manager attended the weekly Ontario Health progress calls for the first 8 weeks alongside the client's project lead. That was not in the original scope. It was offered because the regulatory context made early flagging of any delivery risk more important than usual.
Results
All 3 provincial delivery milestones were hit on time. Zero financial penalties were incurred under the Ontario Health contract. PHIPA compliance was maintained throughout the engagement with no incidents. The data mapping approach identified by the integration architect in week 2 was adopted by Ontario Health as a recommended pattern for future provider integrations on the platform. At engagement close 5 of the 6 engineers were retained by the company as direct hires.
